Remembering the Age of my Snow Camera

I was wondering yesterday, is it possible to walk outside, without a coat, into 32f, and say it is warm out?

For us Alaskans, I suppose it is, as we are seeing signs of spring! The snow is melting, ice is falling from the roofs like cannon shots; rivers are filling to their brims and all the roads are sopping wet. The grey days of winter are slowly fading into hide for next year, and spring’s sun is jumping up!

I wanted to remember my very first year of official photography and all the snowy scenes I’ve learned to capture in a trillion different ways; and share them with ya’ll!

Whistling winter tunes.

You might remember these from my very first blog post, “Backyard Winter Photo shoot.”

For Christmas, my sisters and I took some of the younger kids out to do a red-hatted and red-lipped photo shoot.

Light is often very dark during winter, so I had to borrow some from the iPad…

This broken windo is the only remaining thing of a once house or shack on a wooden slab. It is embedded on a little sand barrier out in the middle of the river. During the winter, when all the water freezes or disintegrates, we’re bake to walk out on to it… and take pictures!!

People of the Iditarod

Every photographer, no matter what their main passion is, has at least once tried street photography. March 2nd, was the day I actually first tried this approach. And I have to say, I absolutely LOVED it!! All the emotions, actions, bonds (etc) that you can capture through the lense is just amazing! You hardly think or notice anything else that is going on around you, while you became a real people watcher!

I was a bit hesitant at first, which is only natural. But then, there are cameras everywhere! We live in a time where phones are carried everywhere and the media is like a second world. People all over are constantly being captured on lenses. Besides, if you are at an event, people are going to be more focused on that than who’s videoing or snapping them!

Some carry cameras, others hold phones; so long as we all get a shot at the dogs! 😀

Cheers from Japan! A lot of the mushers weren’t actually from Alaska, or even the lower forty-eight; the Iditarod bonds us al from all over the world!

One of the angles I really enjoyed shooting were the helpers who held the dogs, and their expressions on what they thought. A lot of the teams were families; so I think this is probably was the musher’s daughter here, doing a good job.

The opening ceremony, the official start, and the entire race are covered by small news companies.

Gotta do anything to get that picture!

Dogs of the 2019 Iditarod

It is a common belief amongst those who do not know the Iditarod well enough, that the mushing dogs are abused. I wish to prove you wrong through my writing and photography. 🙂

If you’ve heard that the dog’s paws get cut, bruises, torn apart (etc), you can lay your worries to rest! The mushers make sure that each of their dogs are wearing botties, that keep the pads warm and protected. Also, these dogs aren’t running over sharp terrain; mostly snow or else the musher’s sled wouldn’t be able to stand the ride either. 🙂 The dog’s paws are continually checked and massaged and sometimes even bathed to assure they are comfortable and well taken care of.


“The dogs are forced to run!” If you have watched, or been to, the Iditarod, you’ll know that these dogs are BARKING like crazy!! You can barely keep them FROM running! In fact, it is the people who hold the dogs who are forced to run!

Some media has said, “The dogs are starving for attention.” Well, this is just not true! The mushers get so attached to their dogs, that if one very gets hurt or dies, they are heart broken and say that “…it’s just not the same if you don’t cross the line with all the dogs.” The mushers know all their dog’s names, even if their is over fifty; and before the race, they take time to whisper to and let each dog. At the check-points, the dogs are massaged until they are sleepy! All of the mushers and dogs are extrealmy attached— that includes mouth-to-mouth licking! And we all know, an animal will do whatever they can to make you pet them more, right?

The mushers never push their dogs, letting them run at their own pace and resting if that is what is needed. A few years ago, on guy was coming in first; but his dogs were just not able to keep up the past, so he didn’t push them…settling in for third. Their dogs are MUCH more important than the race. A lot of the mushers just do the race for the beauty of Alaska and the thrill of the solitude and bonding with the dogs.

Most people are used to seeing 20 pounds over weight house dogs. Mushing dogs are just very fit, just as Olympic athletes are; and the dogs are purposely bred small so they can run faster. A lot of them are also bred with greyhound, which are actually very thin dogs.

Now that we have those out of the way, shall we just enjoy a few pictures of these gloriously happy dogs? 😀

It’s a lie

I often find myself writing things like this; I haven’t yet figured out why these works are called! Sometimes I have a vague idea of what I’m writing; but more often the words just flow from me and I don’t really know what I am writing. Afterward, when the flood is gone, I’ll look back over what I wrote, edit it, and then a story behind the words comes to my mind. I think that most of them are from God, as I feel I could ever write these on my own whim!

THE STORY BEHID THE WORK: The ‘writter’ is a woman, standing in a cement room with barred one window that lets blue light seep a little bit through. There is a metal door behind the woman who stands in full black leather…a pistol in her hand. At her feet is someone – a man- laying in his face, dark chrism pooling in a circle around him.

The woman comes from this story I read in Prepeairing to be A Healp Meet by Debi Pearl (link at end of post) and there was a woman who had torn her husband up and down with her words and attitudes until he decided to leave her. Long story short, he ended up finding another to love, who would treat him better.

So in my writing, the killer is a woman, who, represents a wife who has ‘killed’ her man by the words she used.

“Oh curse these hands!” She was supposed to be his helper, to comfort and, we’ll, help him and build him up. But she never used this great gift for him.

“Little demons riling at my heart.” Was originally going to be the police seeking her out; but then I decided it to be memories of what she’s done and the guilt.

“You stay where you are / don’t come alive….” She does not want her man to come back to her; she knows that though she has changed, she wants him to go some where else and be loved. By someone else who will not make the same mistakes that she did and ruin him again.

“I still love you…” Though she loves him desperately, it is the same story as above. She promises to change, but just cannot take the risk of him coming back to her again.

“Pack up your blood….” He has another that will love him; and the woman encourages him to do so. Though she will be angry at him, she just does not want to hurt the man again; let another do what she never did.

I was leaning up against shelves of folded tank tops in Walmart, pushing the shopping cart slightly back and forth with my toe; trying not to look too crazy with TEN loafs of bread, FOUR jugs of milk, SIX dozen eggs, FOUR cases of water (the pipes are full of rust from previous earthquakes.) and a thousand other items that stacked well above the cart while I waited for my Mom to come…. with the second cart. (Struggles of a large family 🙈) An old, bending man came down the isle I was in; pushing his heavy wife in her wheelchair – and a full shopping cart in the other hand! He was rushing around grabbing all the things his wife demanded for him to grab or for her to look at. I was thinking about how sweet this man was, specially as he seemed to be in more pain than his wife in the shopping cart! but I was shocked, his wife was yelling at him and constantly berating him, telling him that he never did anything right and how (litteraly) stupid and irritating he was! She was acting like SHE was better than him and he was stupid. (Often the view of men these days) He husband was being so sweet and not uttering a sing word the interest time, but just going back to the same shelve five times or more until the woman dedcided exactly what color she wanted. I really wanted to just go up to her and say, “If you spent less time trying to fix your man, and just enjoy him for who he truly is; you’ll both be so happy!” Regretfully, I let fear overcome me and I wanted them both leave. I waited for another ten minutes before mom came, in guilt at having missed such an obvious moment form God; then asked him to forgive me and somehow let that woman know the truth!!

Serksuly, nothing more needs to be said; If you STOP trying to FIX you man, and just ENJOY him for who he IS; then you’ll both me SO much more happy! Please, notice how sweet your man TRULY is ladies! It’s always irking me the way society treats men these days; they really are truly trying! Let’s not murder them with our actions and words, and use these hands that were placed in their’s that white day. 🙂

You Know Better Than I

With graceful fingers he perfectly sculpted the nose to do everything that would keep our lungs beating, pumping the oxygen he also created through the blood and to our heart. With his p mouth he pushed his very own breath into the start of humanity.

Watching, with of so much love He knew they wouldn’t ever grasp, God looked apon the very start of the human race; look forward to spending eternities with his most prized possessions.

Look, if this dude literally created us from a rib and dust, with His own fingers, then can’t he plan our destinies?

We are always so worried about what our futer will hold, and how to get there and accomplish our life’s calling. Why can’t we put our very lives into the palm that held our heart on Day One?

We get upset when things in our life don’t go the way that we want; when we cannot understand what’s happening, or see things in the world that bother us and make us question our creator. While you should totally have questions; just think of this- if God was wise enough the create every vein to do its biddding, the sun to be the perfect distance away from the earth so that life will perfectly grown; the eyes are more complicated than a while octopuse— He created this very body that you are living; can’t He, for Pete’s sake, know what He’s doing with His world, and YOU?

Key to the Soul

Whenever we wonder what is happening inside them, we look to the eyes. Eyes are the window to the souls. While the mouth may say one thing, the eye will betray with a flick of innner emotion. Watch as these pictures reflect the eye of the beholder…

Alaska man… when it is so cold outside, breath becomes frost.

When you, a Photographer, want to capture the subject’s eyes and emotions; you don’t neccisarily have to zoom right up into their face, or ask them to portray a certain emotion. Just take the picture, then later, edit and zoom up into the face (as I’ve done with all the photos here) to focus more on the eyes. Real, non propped emotion, will show through more real than ‘forced’.

This was totaly unposed! Bella walked up behind me, and I just “snapped.” Now this is one of my most loved photos…because it displays an emotion through the eyes.
Photographers do not like shadows, but I play with them. Even though there is a lot of other things in background, Hosanna’s eyes are so big they draw you in; thus making the photo.
This was taken when I first got my Canon, and didn’t know how to focus on both subjects. Though, despite the background disturbance, I think this photo really focuses on his eyes. (And charming smile)
I can’t help but just stare at this photo—those are REAL lashes and REAL eye color! 💜

While most newborn photos are of the entire baby, I wanted to try a zoom. Now, that Zephaniah is three months old, I think his eyes described his thoughts of his first twelve-hours in the world! 😀

A raw photo; beautiful, dirty nails and all.

So, did my photos tell stories through the eyes? If they did, I hope I inspired you to “capture eyes.” It really is very easy, not as hard as it may seem or sound. You don’t have to blur everything around the subject’s eyes, or have some high-tech-zooming-lens…just take the picture, and edit or manually zoom in on you device—or leave the photo the way it is. Either way, the eye will always speak.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” -Mathew 6:22-23

You know those days when your makeup just doesn’t look right, or you can’t master the technique like you have sense..forever?

I had one of those days, my sister and I, when we were gearing up for a photo shoot, and our makeup was being awful; smearing included! I didn’t really have a theme for the photos, but a wise photographer once said, “Take a photo everyday and you will become a better photographer.”

Insparation can come in a thousand forms, (if we just have our eyes open enough!) and when I looked at my sister’s makeup from a different angle, insparation was born! I just messed with her speared face a little bit more, and the inspired idea was formed—a clown photo shoot! For some of the backdrop, sense I don’t have a good program for backgrounds yet, I decided to use the only semi-truck trailer our landlords have on the property. You have to improvise and make do with what you have, right?

We spent a full hour/half hour in the wind and cold, and these are the results! Some of the photos were taken or posed one way, but you can turn them differently, so I’ll show you those. I’ll also show you the behind the scenes of the photos and how you can do them yourself without any elaborate or expensive materials…

I haven’t airbrushed this photo because, one, her face is perfect!! and two, I like how the ‘rough’ face adds more texture to the photo. I also used blends of powders to stick to the face in different texture or color. The nose is also improvised, it’s red lipstick. I did go for the more “messy” face look; but that was the feel I wanted. (This is actually a close-up of the cover photo.)
I’m not into all that “creepy clown” stuff, but I suppose that is how some of these photos may have tuned out. 🙊
If you want to get an angle in the photo, you can pose on the side of something, and turn your camera on a side angle. It gives the photo another feel and dimension.

Now, I know that not every photographer will be comfortable with zooming in on your modeler’s face, so you could use a longer lense, but then it is just too much switching lenses (for me), because you are not going to be able to get a farther-away capture with you longer lense unless you switch. But the disitions yours! Just remeber, capturing the same photo from different angles can make several different photos without much work!

These could look like two different photos when not placed side-by-side, but they’re actually the same photo, just, again, from different angles and zoom. It is actually quite fun seeing how many shots you can get with one pose; and it improves your technique and experience!

This may look like a nice breezy photo from the ‘outside’, but actually…she’s standing on a chair. See what goes on “behind the lense”?

Have the person you are shooting (🙊) move around more. This makes more shots, and helps find that perfect one you are wishing for.

Don’t worry about the background sometimes, as you can always edit it with a program, such as PaintShop Pro. (For a how-to-use, here’s a very helpful link: learn.corel.com

If you are not having fun, or are bored with your photos, try and look at things (and life!) from another angle. Insparation comes, and is there, at all times. We just have to learn to look for it. 😉

White-Sun Photo-shoot

There is an hour called, “Photographer’s Hour”

It is when the sun is setting, all golden and bright and the sky is an array of fiery colors. If you read my other blog “Momentary Joy”, you no doubt viewed my pictures form that hour.

Normally, whenever you see sunlight in a photo, it is either added manually, or was taken during the golden hour. However, I wanted to test out the sun when it was shining white, and high in the sky.

I have to say the color is not the best and the sun is harder to capture and look good, though I did thoroughly enjoy it, and the pictures (that don’t have a filter) have a nice soft glow to them from the light at the afternoon hour. Remember, I took all these on my property, so it it not hard to do—just grab ahold of your camera, a modeler, and shoot that sun! You yourself will discover which is your best hour to photograph the light.

The wind has been blowing furiously the past couple days, so there was no need for a blower to add dramatic effect to the hair! When it is windy out, I also love to dash our with a camera! 😀
I have been using my camera at an upside down angle more and more often now, instead of trying to shoot the whole picture straight. In my opinion, the photo turns our much better.

More and more people are using their iPhones for cameras. I have used one several times, but one of the things I just can’t get it to properly capture is a full-body pose like this. It usually stretches out the person weirdly. I still enjoy using my own camera and feeling the weight of it around my neck.
Right now I am really into taking ‘bending’ photos.
A dramatic face can tell louder than a backdrop.
Again, the face speaks louder than the backdrop. Your main focus should usually be the object to which you are capturing.
In between shoots, we had to wear coats because it was so cold. As you can see, someone likes to capture photos off-shoot as well. 🙂

Although I don’t prefer using the iPhone, sometimes an ‘iPhone style’ photo is still cute. Shortly after my sister and I finished up our shoot, our younger siblings walked up and wanted to try a hand at the camera.

At imagination of a photographer, great things can happen. With the click of a lense, you can capture a memory to last longer than a lifetime…don’t miss a single chance!
